What makes a fish?
Read the guidance first! Then drag the statements into the correct boxes. When you are ready, use the 'Mark' button to see if you're right.
Discussion points
- How can you tell if an animal is a fish?
- Where can you go to see lots of different types of fish?
- Life is very complicated which makes it hard to define rules. However, there are general rules which apply to the majority of cases. The exceptions can be very interesting. Why not look up animals which don't obey the general rules for their class?
Teaching tips:
Allocate ‘Always true’, ‘Mostly true’, ‘Sometimes true’ and ‘Never true’ to four different parts of the classroom.
After reading the guidance but before completing the sorting activity, read out one of the statements and get children to move and stand in the area of the classroom they think the statement applies to.
Ask children to justify their decision; they could back up their opinion with evidence from the guidance. Have a discussion and allow children to move if they have changed their mind.
Use with the other ‘What makes a ____’ activities to discover common features and structures of vertebrates.
