How many vertices? - 3-D shapes
Click and drag the 3-D shape to the correct box depending on how many vertices it has. When you are finished, click the ‘Mark’ button to see if you are right.
Discussion points
- What is a vertex? What are vertices?
- How do you know you have counted all the vertices correctly?
- What do you notice about the shapes with no vertices?
Teaching tips:
Give children time to handle and explore 3-D shapes. Can they run their fingers along and around the shapes and talk about what they notice? Which 3-D shapes can roll? Which are better for using as building blocks? Why?
Ask children to sort them; what rule they have used for sorting them? Stem sentence: ‘I have sorted them by ____.’
Pair this activity with ‘How many faces?’ to look in more detail at properties of 3-D shapes.
