Ordering tall things
Place the tall things on the line from smallest on the left to tallest on the right. When you are ready, use the 'Mark' button to see if you are right.
Discussion points
- What do you notice about the objects further to the right of the line?
- What would we do if two numbers have the same number of tens?
- What other object could go before the first object on the line?
Teaching tips:
Before completing this activity, use ‘Place value sweet factory’ to ensure children have a solid understanding of the value of each digit in a 2-digit number before being able to make comparisons between them.
Some children may need manipulatives, such as Dienes, to support this ordering activity. Other children could use manipulatives and inequality symbols as a means of justifying their answers to develop reasoning skills.
Stem sentences:
‘I know that __ is greater than __ because ___’
‘I know that __ is less than __ because ___’
Pair with ‘Numerical order: numbers up to 99’ and ‘Numerical order: numerals and words below 99’.
