Viking runes
Use the stickers and the key to write a word - maybe your name - or a message.
See if someone else can decode what you have written.
N.B.Some licence has been used to correlate runes to the English letters.
Discussion points
- Viking runes were not used by the Vikings for everyday writing. They were regarded as special. The name rune comes from a word meaning 'secret' or 'whisper'.
- The runic alphabet doesn't start with 'A' and 'B' (alpha and beta in Greek), so it is called the 'Futhark' after the first six runes.
- The runes were symbols that are linked to Viking mythology.
