Treehouse
Keep count of the number of pink men in the treehouse. At higher levels there are two treehouses. Watch carefully because pink men will also leave the houses.
For extra help, remember you can look inside the houses by using the magnifying glass.
Teaching tips:
Use this activity to practise counting and concentration.
Count the number of pink men who enter the tree house.
As the questions progress, a second tree house is introduced. Children must then focus on the total in both tree houses, or on just one, requiring an added layer of concentration. A pink flag indicates which tree house to focus on.
The magnifying glass can be used to show the pink men once inside the tree house and check the amount. The settings can be adjusted to limit magnifying glass use to 5 times per game or to allow unlimited use.
As the questions progress, after all the pink men have entered the tree house(s), some of them will leave, presenting an opportunity to introduce or practise subtraction. The number buttons at the bottom of the screen can also be used as a number line to count more or less than a given number.
Notice that the pink men enter in groups; this can be used to point out familiar number additions, for example: “First, 4 pink men went into the tree house, then 3 more followed them. That means there must be 7 altogether, because I know that 4 + 3 = 7.”
The sounds created by each pink man entering the two different tree houses, and the sounds of pink men exiting the tree houses, make it possible to keep count without relying on the visuals of the game. This makes the activity inclusive for visually impaired learners and also provides an opportunity to challenge children to count using only their listening skills.
