Mirror magic
Try to create the mirror image on the right hand side of the screen. At early levels use the button to change it. Later, there will be other buttons to scale and rotate the shape into place. Once the picture is complete the creature will come to life!
Discussion points
- What do you notice about the patterns and shapes on both sides?
- Can you spot any 2-D shapes?
- Do you know what the vertical line down the middle is called?
Teaching tips:
This activity is a lovely introduction to symmetry. It uses fun creatures to engage children in spotting and noticing shapes and patterns along a vertical line of symmetry.
Children might like to use real mirrors and pictures to explore mirror images and talk about what they can see.
Use with ‘Snowflakes’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Colour a bug’ for more simple symmetrical fun!
