Discussion points
- As the temperature of the earth gradually rises due to the greenhouse effect, the polar ice melts into the ocean.
- There are incredible volumes of water locked away in polar ice. If this were to melt entirely, it would raise sea level by 84m!
- Even a small rise of 1m could have dramatic effects on global coasts and some of the biggest cities in the world.
- Numerically and geographically, South and East Asia are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This is because sea level rise will have a disproportionate effect on the populations living in low-lying areas.
- Six of Asia’s ten mega-cities are located on the coast (Jakarta, Shanghai, Tokyo, Manila, Bangkok and Mumbai). China has 41% of its population, 60% of its wealth and 70% of its megacities in coastal areas.
- Sea level is made worse by the storm surge from typhoons. Monsoon rain draining from the land adds to the problem.
